How We Test Sport Headphones

Every pair on this list was worn for runs, rides, and gym sessions over at least two weeks. We evaluate five core areas and weight them into the final score.

Stability & Fit (30%)

We run, sprint, jump, and lift in each pair to see if they stay locked in. Fit is tested across multiple ear and head shapes with the included tips and hooks.

Sweat/Water Resistance (20%)

We check IP ratings, then douse each pair in sweat and rain conditions to confirm they survive real workouts and keep working after repeated exposure.

Situational Awareness (20%)

Open-ear and bone-conduction models are judged on how well they let in ambient sound for safety. In-ear models are assessed for transparency modes.

Sound Quality (15%)

We test across workout-friendly genres electronic, hip-hop, rock, and podcasts judging energy, bass punch, and clarity at typical workout volumes.

Battery (15%)

Real-world battery tests at 60% volume, plus total battery with the charging case for open-ear and true wireless designs alike.

Bone conduction vs open-ear?

Bone conduction (like Shokz OpenRun) transmits sound through your cheekbones, leaving ears fully open. Open-ear air-conduction buds (like Shokz OpenFit) sit outside the ear canal and use small speakers. Bone conduction is best for safety and glasses wearers; open-ear generally sounds richer.

IP ratings explained?

The first digit is dust protection (0C6) and the second is water (0C9). IPX7 survives splashes and sweat; IP68 is dust-tight and submersible. For serious workouts, look for IPX4 minimum, IP67/IP68 for rugged training.

Best for running safety?

For road running, bone-conduction Shokz or open-ear designs let you hear traffic, cyclists, and voices. Avoid sealed in-ear buds with ANC on busy roads situational awareness beats noise isolation for safety.

Will they fall out?

A secure fit depends on design and your ear shape. Earhook models (Powerbeats Pro 2, JBL Endurance Peak 3) and bone-conduction bands stay put best. True wireless in-ear models should include multiple tip sizes or fins for a stable fit.
