How We Test Mesh WiFi

Every mesh system on this list was purchased at retail and deployed in real homes ranging from 1,500 to 6,000 sq ft. We measured throughput at multiple distances and tested roaming, then weighted results into the final score.

Throughput & Coverage (35%)

We run iperf3 speed tests at 10, 25, 50, and 75 feet through walls, and measure how throughput holds up as nodes are added across multi-floor homes.

Ease of Setup (20%)

We time first-time setup, evaluate the mobile app's clarity, and test adding a new node, changing SSID, and configuring guest networks without consulting documentation.

Stability/Roaming (20%)

We walk between nodes on a video call and measure roaming latency, dropouts, and how quickly devices re-associate without manual intervention.

Smart Features (15%)

We assess parental controls, IoT hub support (Thread, Zigbee, Matter), VPN, QoS, and how these features are exposed in the app.

Value (10%)

Coverage per dollar, included warranty, and the cost of optional subscriptions are weighed against the system's real-world performance.

Do I need WiFi 6E or WiFi 7?

WiFi 6E adds the clean 6GHz band, which matters if you have many 6E devices or live in a crowded apartment building. WiFi 7 is faster still but devices are scarce in 2026. For most homes, WiFi 6 is plenty upgrade to 6E only if you have compatible phones and laptops.

How many mesh nodes do I need?

One node per 1,500C2,000 sq ft is a good rule of thumb. A 2-pack covers most apartments and small homes; a 3-pack handles 3,000C4,500 sq ft. Large or multi-story homes may need a 4-pack or a wired backhaul between nodes.

Mesh vs router + extender which is better?

Mesh systems use a single network name and seamlessly steer devices between nodes, while traditional extenders create separate networks and require manual switching. Mesh is simpler and faster for most homes; a router + extender can still win in small apartments or for power users who want full control.

What's the best mesh system for gigabit internet?

Look for a tri-band system with a 2.5GbE or 10GbE WAN port, like the Asus ZenWiFi Pro ET12 or Netgear Orbi RBKE963. These keep a dedicated wireless backhaul free for device traffic and won't bottleneck a 1 Gbps+ fiber connection.
