How We Test Air Purifiers

Every air purifier on this list was purchased at retail and tested for a minimum of two weeks in real homes. We evaluate five core areas and weight them into the final score.

CADR & Coverage (30%)

Clean Air Delivery Rate tells you how quickly a purifier removes particles from a given room size. We verify manufacturer CADR for smoke, dust, and pollen, then test real-world coverage in rooms of varying volume.

Filtration (25%)

We require a true-HEPA layer (0.3 micron, 99.97%) and weigh the quality and depth of the activated carbon stage for VOCs, smoke, and odors. We also consider pre-filter design and washability.

Noise (20%)

We measure decibel output on every fan speed, including sleep mode, and subjectively rate whether the purifier is unobtrusive enough for bedrooms and home offices.

Smart Features (15%)

App quality, air-quality sensors, auto mode, voice assistant support, and scheduling all weighed against how reliably they improve day-to-day air quality management.

Filter Cost & Value (10%)

Replacement filter pricing, expected lifespan, and availability are factored in to reflect the true cost of ownership over several years.

Are air purifiers worth it?

Yes for allergy sufferers, households with pets, anyone in wildfire-smoke regions, or people concerned about indoor VOCs. A good purifier measurably reduces airborne particulates and improves sleep and respiratory comfort.

How big a room can it cover?

Match the purifier's Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) to your room size. A common rule: divide CADR by 1.55 to estimate square footage. The Coway Airmega 400 on our list covers up to 1,560 sq ft, while bedroom models handle 200C400 sq ft.

How often should I change the filter?

Most true-HEPA filters last 6C12 months with typical use; carbon layers may need replacing every 3C6 months if you deal with smoke or strong odors. Always follow the manufacturer's indicator or app reminders.

Do I need a true-HEPA filter?

For allergen and fine-particle removal, yes. True HEPA captures 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns. "HEPA-type" or "HEPA-style" filters do not meet this standard and are far less effective.
